Is Seedly CRM Hard to Set Up? What the Day Actually Looks Like

Four to seven hours of guided work, no code. A chapter-by-chapter look at installing Seedly CRM, what each step costs, and the one thing to start early.

“Self-hosted” scares people off, and it shouldn’t. The fear is a weekend of terminal errors and Stack Overflow tabs. What Seedly actually gives you is a guided checklist with a patient narrator.

The short answer

  • Active time: about 4 to 7 hours, and it splits nicely into 30 to 60 minute sessions
  • Waiting time: 1 to 7 days for US carriers to approve SMS registration
  • Code you’ll write: none
  • What you need: a Mac or Windows computer, an email address, a card for free-tier sign-ups, and a name for your agency

Meet Sprout

You unzip the download, open a terminal in the folder, and type one line: npx pnpm run setup. A guided companion called Sprout takes over. It creates your accounts with you, provisions the backend, generates the secret keys and connects your providers, one step at a time. It waits for you and explains each step in plain English.

If you’d rather have an AI assistant along, the project ships with instructions for Claude Code. Open the folder, start Claude, and it walks you through the manual a chapter at a time, checking that each step worked before moving on.

There’s also a setup:check “doctor” command that tells you what’s missing or misconfigured. It’s the most useful thing in the box.

The day, chapter by chapter

Stage What happens Time
Tools and GitHub Install Node.js and the basics, create a GitHub account 30–45 min
Backend and hosting Create Convex (dev + production) and Vercel, point your domain ~75 min
Email Connect Postmark, SendGrid or Amazon SES ~30 min
SMS and voice Twilio, optional Telnyx fallback, start A2P registration 45 min + waiting
Payments Connect your Stripe account ~30 min
Integrations Google, Microsoft, Meta, Zoom. Pick only what you need 30–90 min
Branded logins Optional, about 20 min per brand optional
Launch First admin account, pre-launch checklist, go live ~30 min

The one thing to do early

Start the SMS chapter on day one. US carriers require every business that texts customers to register its brand and campaign (A2P 10DLC). Approval takes 1 to 7 days, and every SMS platform goes through it, GoHighLevel included. Kick it off early and keep working on the other chapters while you wait.

What it costs to get going

Most of the services have free tiers that cover a new install:

  • Convex (database and backend): free to start
  • Vercel (hosting): free Hobby tier to start
  • Postmark / SendGrid: free at low volume
  • Twilio: about a $20 deposit, then pay as you go
  • A2P registration: about $15 in one-time fees
  • A domain: $10 to $15 a year

Seedly’s own estimate is $0 to $20 a month to start, growing with how active your sub-accounts are.

Compared with “sign up and go”

GoHighLevel is live the moment your card clears, and that’s a genuine advantage. It’s also the last setup advantage it has: you still connect your domain, set up your phone numbers, register for A2P, connect Stripe and configure email on GoHighLevel too. What Seedly adds is the backend and hosting accounts, about two hours of the day.

You spend about two extra hours setting up once, and in exchange you stop paying a monthly rent you’d otherwise pay indefinitely.

Questions people ask

Do I need to know how to code to install Seedly CRM?

No. A guided setup companion called Sprout walks you through every step in plain English, and an 18-chapter manual covers the same ground in more detail. You need a computer, an email address, a credit card for free-tier sign-ups and an agency name.

How long does Seedly CRM take to set up?

About 4 to 7 hours of active time. US SMS registration (A2P 10DLC) adds a 1 to 7 day wait for carrier approval, so start that step early.
